Watch: Lewis Hamilton treats fans with burnouts in Mercedes W12 in front of the Empire State Building in New York City

Formula 1 heads to the United States for the Miami GP this weekend. The sport has seen a massive rise in popularity in the ‘Land of the Free.’ Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has undoubtedly played a massive role in this growth. Now, the Mercedes star delighted fans after taking his old Mercedes F1 car for a ride in New York City.

Lewis Hamilton drove the 2021 Mercedes W12 in the Big Apple. The car which the Briton lost the 2021 world title to Max Verstappen at the infamous Abu Dhabi season finale. The W12 was repainted in Mercedes’ 2024 livery with a silver and black color scheme.

The seven-time world champion drove the W12 right in front of the iconic Empire State Building, once the tallest in the world. Lewis Hamilton did burnouts in front of fans who had gathered at Fifth avenue to get a glimpse of the 39-year-old. Certainly, Hamilton had kicked off the Miami GP weekend in style with more exciting activities expected in the coming days from F1.

Lewis Hamilton delighted after special New York outing

Lewis Hamilton is known for his special connection with the United States. The Briton claimed that he had dreamt of living in New York City as a kid. As such, Hamilton was glad to have spent time in the Big Apple over the years.

I've always felt a special connection with the United States. I remember going to New York as a kid and dreaming about living in the city and I've been fortunate to spend a lot of time here since then. Lewis Hamilton said, as reported by GPFans

Moreover, the seven-time world champion recalled his incredible experiences in the city where he had met some great people. However, Hamilton claimed that driving an F1 car on Fifth avenue on the way to the Empire State Building was unimaginable. The British driver expressed his joy in being able to have such a special outing.

I've had many incredible experiences and connected with many amazing people in New York, but to drive an F1 car down Fifth Avenue and light up the Empire State Building is incredibly special. It's something I never thought would be possible. Lewis Hamilton asserted

Certainly, fans loved to see Lewis Hamilton get behind the wheel in his last race-winning Mercedes in NYC. The seven-time world champion would be looking to have a good race in Miami this weekend. The Silver Arrows have had a poor start to the 2024 season. As such, Hamilton would potentially try to salvage a podium finish for his American fans.
